Inle Lake is located in Burma’s western Shan state. The lake is home to the Inthu people, many of whom live off the lake by farming ‘floating gardens.’

On the lake small cottage industries flourish and regular boat trips make it possible for travelers to visit them. – hand woven silk, silver smith shops, cheerot (Burmese cigars) making, weaving, paper making shops employ a range of people, young and old.

Enjoying a cool drink from one of the cafes on the river enabled me to observe life on the river, the leg rowing fisherman adding another dimension to the activities I’d become familiar with.

In the hills surrounding Nyaung Shwe it is possible to trek through local villages chatting with the locals, playing with the children or sitting with monks in their caves.

The authenticity of these people, their gentle ways and willingness to learn mean I will return to enjoy and experience life here.
