The Mediterranean Sea links three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa. The diversity of people, languages and religions were real eye-openers. For twelve weeks I became a pilgrim traveling from Spain to Morocco and then Istanbul, where I witnessed the enormous influence Islam had on these countries. In Spain a Tibetan Monastery in the North made a refreshing change from the cathedrals and mosques and I found the relaxed lifestyle most appealing. In Morocco it appeared I’d been transported back to Biblical times where donkeys worked hard, women were veiled and men drank tea in coffee shops. I admired the ingenuity of Istanbul with its fortified walls, ancient mosques and museums I was, after all, from a relatively ‘new’ country so these experiences provided me with many opportunities to broaden my horizons.

The following year I made a trip to Cyprus where I stayed with friends. From there I went to Lebanon, the home of my brother-in-law and was welcomed into the family fold. From my hostel I could easily access the city of Beirut and it was here nestled between the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea I witnessed the re-building of the downtown area. I made friends with a few of the locals, the fruit shop man, the owner of an internet café and the local restaurants.. I was on my way to join a tour to the Temples of Jupiter when a taxi driver offered me a proposal of marriage.

Still single I took a short cruise to Cairo where I belly danced on the Nile (no photos of this) and then onto the Holy Land. No more cruises for me though because I was sea sick and missed out on the evening entertainment and even some of the scrumptious meals.
